Bulrush

Bulrush

Painted during the Jewish festival of Passover, Bulrush draws on the ancient story of Moses — a tale of fragility, courage, and hidden deliverance. According to the biblical narrative, Moses’ mother, defying the Pharaoh’s decree to kill all newborn Hebrew boys, places her infant son in a woven basket and hides him among the bulrushes of the Nile. There, cradled in reeds, he is discovered by Pharaoh’s daughter, quietly watched over by his sister Miriam, and — through a twist of grace — returned to be nursed by his own mother. The bulrushes in this work become more than vegetation: they stand as symbols of precarious beginnings, of maternal bravery, and of salvation emerging in the margins. In their gentle verticals and subtle movement, they speak of life held delicately — and the unseen hands that protect it.
